Philippi, a township in Cape Town, South Africa, is a community shaped by resilience but deeply
challenged by systemic poverty, crime, and limited opportunities. For the youth growing up here,
daily life is fraught with obstacles that extend beyond financial hardship. Gang violence is a
persistent reality, often making it unsafe to move freely in their own neighborhoods. High rates
of substance abuse and HIV further compound the struggles, leaving many young people
vulnerable and uncertain about their future.


Schools, while beacons of hope, frequently lack the resources needed to provide a quality
education, and overcrowded classrooms make personalized academic support nearly
impossible. Many young people drop out, not because they lack ambition, but because they
face insurmountable barriers—be it the need to care for younger siblings, the pressure to
contribute financially, or the emotional toll of growing up in a high-stress environment. It is in this
context that Amandla Development steps in, offering not just support, but a lifeline.

Zizo first joined Amandla Development in 2020, as a Grade 8 student, after being introduced by
a friend. She was drawn to our programs, particularly the Sexual Reproductive Health and
self-defense club, which provided her with invaluable knowledge and skills. Through these
initiatives, she learned how to defend herself, understand her body, and make informed
decisions about her well-being.


Beyond these vital lessons, Amandla Development played a key role in Zizo’s education. Our
programs provided her with access to quality learning resources, a safe and supportive
environment, and mentorship that helped shape her personal and academic growth. With our
guidance, she developed critical life skills, resilience, and self-confidence.

Zizo’s dedication and perseverance paid off when she successfully completed her matric with a

University of Technology, pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher.
