From The Founder

Amandla has been working in the Philippi Township of Cape Town for over 10 years to break the cycle of poverty and HIV’s grip on our youth.

Amandla’s community network has implemented a holistic model to ensure our youth have access to high-quality services in ways that account for their specific challenges and context. Our 5 Safer Spaces have been a key strategy for accomplishing our goals

40% of girls and 60% of boys reported not knowing how to or being uncomfortable with accessing SRH (sexual reproductive health) services via clinics.

Stigma in health services and non-existent sexuality education in schools meant that our youth lacked knowledge and were too scared to access the formal health system.

Our Safer Spaces have:

  • Decentralised SRH and other youth-specific services thanks to our deep partnership with health providers, local government, local NGOs, schools, and other community groups
  • Provided layered services that include:
    • HIV testing
    • PrEP initiation
    • ART support
    • Family planning
    • Academic and career support
    • Counselling services
What's Next?

Amandla wants to expand both the offerings of its current Safer Spaces and to build new ones. The expanded offerings would include targeted services to:

  • LGBTQ+ youth both in Cape Town and surrounds
  • Low-resource queer youth in unserved areas outside the metro
  • People with HIV

Expanding is vital because…

  • Few services are tailored to the most vulnerable both in Philippi and in rural areas
  • Targeted services from trusted community partners increases rates of youth HIV testing
  • Reaching our 95-95-95 goals requires a more targeted approach beyond the usual and easier to work in areas

Here is how you can get involved and help us to lift the next generation up, from cradle to career. Thank you for answering our call.

Amandla. The Power Is Ours.
